he used to have no metal parts on the arms...which bothered me allot. He blocks bullets and we see metal sparks flying...now it makes more sense.

Well the old version, in my opinion (as I'm writing some KF background) is the original specimen. E.g the specimens were originally mutated from real humans, the new versions are the cloned specimens.
EDIT: As the original human that was modified was a boxer, hence the funky tattoos.
